Smoke Detector Installation

Protect your family with properly

installed, up-to-code smoke alarms

At BTE Electric, we install smoke detectors the right way: hardwired, interconnected, and placed where code (and common sense) says they should be. Whether you’re replacing expired units, adding alarms to meet updated code, or outfitting a new space, we’ll make sure your home is protected.

We serve homeowners throughout Mid-Michigan and Traverse City with licensed electricians who know the code, carry the right tools, and leave your ceiling looking just as good as they found it.

Why Do I Need Smoke Detectors Installed by an Electrician?

If your smoke detectors are more than 10 years old, missing entirely, or battery-only, it’s time to upgrade. A professional install ensures:

  • Alarms are installed in all code-required areas
  • Devices are interconnected, so if one goes off, they all do
  • Units are powered by the home’s electrical system with battery backup
  • Combo smoke/CO detectors are used where appropriate
  • Everything meets Michigan Residential Code and the National Electrical Code (NEC)

Most homes we work in are either under-protected or have expired alarms without the homeowner realizing it.

Common Questions About Smoke Detector Installation

Q. What Does Code Require for Smoke Detector Placement?

ANSWER: Current residential electrical code requires:

  • One smoke alarm in every bedroom
  • One outside each sleeping area
  • One on each level of the home, including the basement
  • Hardwired with battery backup for most installations
  • Interconnected so all alarms sound together

If you’re finishing a basement, remodeling, or just replacing old devices, we’ll walk your home and make sure you’re covered.

ANSWER: We install a variety of options based on your needs and the layout of your home:

  • Hardwired smoke-only units
  • Hardwired smoke/CO combination units
  • Photoelectric sensors (less false alarms from steam)
  • Ionization sensors (faster flame detection)
  • Dual-sensor models (best of both worlds)
  • Smart detectors that connect to your phone (like Nest Protect)

Our electricians carry trusted brands like Kidde, First Alert, and Nest. We’ll help you choose what’s right for your space.

ANSWER: Most homes can expect to pay:

  • $150–$250 for the first hardwired smoke detector
  • $80–$150 for each additional unit (depending on access and ceiling height)
  • Combo smoke/CO detectors cost slightly more, starting at $180–$275 each

If you’re replacing outdated units, costs are often lower, especially if existing wiring is reusable. For brand new installs additional wiring or circuit changes may be required, and we’ll walk through that with you up front.

We’re also happy to quote whole-home smoke detector upgrades or code-compliant replacements during remodels or service work.

ANSWER: Every 10 years. Even if they still “beep” when tested, the sensor may not function properly.

ANSWER: Yes. If you have gas appliances, an attached garage, or a fireplace, code requires CO protection as well. We often install combo smoke/CO units in hallways and common areas.

ANSWER: Absolutely. We specialize in upgrades and will fish wire through walls and ceilings cleanly and professionally.

ANSWER: That’s usually a sign of an expired or malfunctioning unit. We’ll inspect your system and replace any faulty alarms.

ANSWER: When you schedule smoke detector installation with BTE, we take care of:

  • Reviewing your home layout and code requirements
  • Supplying and installing the right detectors
  • Making clean, code-compliant connections
  • Testing every alarm and showing you how it works
  • Disposing of your old units safely
